GEORGE TOWN: A senior citizen was found dead, allegedly stabbed by her son, who is said to be suffering from mental problems, at an apartment in Relau here today.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Razlam Ab Hamid said the suspect, who is also the youngest child called his brother at about 5pm to inform of the incident.

The brother then contacted the police.

Police rushed to the scene and nabbed the 40-year-old suspect at the unit.

"Initial investigation found that before the incident, the eldest and second child had contacted the 67-year-old victim but the calls went unanswered.

"They were shocked when informed their mother had died after she was stabbed with a pair of scissors by the suspect," he said when met at the scene tonight.

The victim would come to the apartment, dropped off by the husband, three times a week. On other days, she would stay with her eldest child in Batu Maung.

"The suspect had threatened to kill all his family members when they were staying together in Batu Maung.

"He previously received psychiatric treatment at Jalan Perak last year," he added.

Razlam said the motive of the murder is still under investigation.

The remains have been sent to the Penang Hospital for post-mortem.

The case is probed under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
