ALOR STAR: A man who assaulted a policeman was sentenced to 28 months' jail after he pleaded guilty to possession of a stolen motorcycle.

Mohd Fikhri Amar @ Omar, 32, entered the plea after the charge was read before magistrate Siti Norhidayah Mohd Noor.

According to the charge, the air-conditioner technician was accused of stealing a Honda Wave motorcycle in Kampung Telaga Batu, Limbong, on June 6 at 2.20am .

The court also fined him RM1,000 and RM3,000 respectively after he pleaded guilty to causing injury to a policeman and obstructing a civil servant from performing his duties at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital at 3am on the same day.

Under Section 337 of the Penal Code, he was charged with recklessly causing injury to the victim using a Yamaha Y15 motorcycle, while the obstruction charge was framed under Section 186 of the same act.

Deputy public prosecutor J. Banusha prosecuted, while the accused was represented by counsel Saidina Khatijah Zaharah Khairulnisak Mohd Noor from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

Also at the Sessions Court here, Fikhri pleaded guilty to a charge of intentionally causing grievous injuries to a man using a helmet.

He committed the offence in front of a house in Jalan Kuala Kedah, Teluk Kechai, on June 5 at 9.30pm.

The prosecution was conducted by Inspector Ruslan Usman while the accused was not represented.

The accused faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and may also be fined or whipped.

However, judge Jean Sharmila Jesudason postponed the sentencing pending the victim's medical report.

The court set July 14 for mention and offered bail at RM20,000 with two sureties, in addition to requiring the accused to report to the nearest police station.

However, the accused did not post bail as he was jailed for the offence under Section 379A.
