KOTA KINABALU: A lorry driver was jailed for two days and fined RM10,000 in default of three months jail for offering a RM150 bribe to a policeman.

Mohammad Asraffi, 21, pleaded guilty before Sessions Court judge Jason Juga.

Mohammad offered the bribe to an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of the Kota Kinabalu Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, as an inducement not to take action against him for driving without a driving license and to release his undocumented girlfriend.

He committed the offence on April 23, 2023, at 9.30pm at Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen near the Sabah Maju Jaya building here.

The offence under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 is punishable under Section 24 (1) of the same Act.

It provides a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of RM10,000 or not less than five times the bribe amount, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission prosecuting officer Norsham Saharom urged for a deterrent sentence citing, among others, that bribing a government servant is a serious offence.

Mohammad was unrepresented.
