MARAN: Two lorry drivers were killed after their respective vehicles were involved in a head-on collision at KM67 of Jalan Kuantan - Kuala Lumpur near Luit here today (March 12).

The deceased were identified as Isuzu lorry driver Ismanizam Zulkanain Azmi, 22, and Nik Mohamad Zainudin M.Baki, 38, who was driving a Hino trailer laden with oil palm fruits. Both victims were travelling alone during the 12.30pm mishap.

Maran police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohamad Zamri Mohamad Zaber said investigations revealed Ismanizam was travelling from Kuantan towards Kuala Lumpur while Nik Mohamad Zainudin was on the opposite lane.

"Ismanizam is believed to have lost control of his lorry while negotiating a bend before it swerved into the opposite lane and crashed into the oncoming trailer. Both the victims were killed on the spot," he said, adding their remains were taken to Jengka Hospital for post-mortem.He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, Pahang Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria said eight firemen from the Maran fire station were deployed to the scene after being alerted of the incident at 12.30pm.

"Firemen used rescue tools to bring out the remains of the Hino lorry driver from the mangled vehicle while the other driver was thrown out of the vehicle. Both the bodies were handed to police," he said.
