KUALA LUMPUR: A senior officer with the Kuala Lumpur police has been transferred while the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigates him for allegedly protecting vice rings.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said: "This officer was remanded for two offences under Section 17 of the MACC Act and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA).

"The officer from the City contingent was released on bail last Saturday (while investigations are completed).

"We are awaiting for MACC's decision, and we confirm that the officer is back at work but we have placed him in another position while awaiting the investigation," he said.

Rusdi said this when met at the handing over ceremony between Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah and the newly appointed Wangsa Maju district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Lazim Ismail at the Wangsa Maju district police headquarters here today.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki had not ruled out the possibility that the officer did not act alone and that even higher-ranking officers were involved.

Rusdi said an internal investigation into these allegation was being carried out in parallel with the MACC probe.

The senior police officer was detained by the MACC in Putrajaya on March 23 on suspicion of protecting vice rings in Kuala Lumpur.

Sources said raids on premises believed to be owned by the suspect yielded more than RM1 million.
