KANGAR: A former administrative assistant officer with a private higher learning institution (IPTS) in Perlis was remanded for three days beginning today to facilitate investigations over the alleged misappropriation of nearly RM1 million funds from the institution.

The remand application was granted by Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission presented the man to the court this morning.

The 33-year-old man was one of the two suspects detained by MACC in separate locations in Kuala Lumpur and Kangar yesterday.

It was reported that MACC had arrested two former staff members of a IPTS in the north on suspicion of misappropriating nearly RM1 million from the institution.

The suspects were detained at the MACC office in Kuala Lumpur and Kangar yesterday after they turned up to have their statement recorded.

Sources had said the suspects are believed to have committed the offence from 2022 to 2023, with one of the suspects using his position as a 'Special Officer' to the chief financial officer of the IPTS to transfer funds from the institution's account to his own personal account and another suspect's.

"It is estimated that over 50 bank transactions to a tune of between RM20,000 and RM30,000 per month were transferred to the suspect's account," said a source.

Meanwhile, MACC Perlis director, Suzeliyana Hashim, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and said that the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
