KUALA LUMPUR: Perlis Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested two former staff members of a private higher education institution (IPTS) in the north on suspicion of misappropriating nearly RM1 million from the institution.

Sources revealed that both male suspects, aged in their 30s, were believed to have been arrested separately at around 5.30pm earlier today at the MACC offices in Kuala Lumpur and also in Perlis when they were requested to provide statements.

"Both suspects are believed to have committed the offense from 2022 to 2023, with the first suspect using his position as a 'Special Officer' to the chief financial officer of the IPTS to transfer funds from the institution's account to his own personal account and another suspect's.

"The total amount of money transferred involved approximately 60 bank transactions totaling nearly RM1 million, and all of the money was used for personal purposes," they said.

Meanwhile, MACC Perlis director, Suzeliyana Hashim, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and said that the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.

She said that following the arrests, the first suspect, who is also a former 'Special Officer' of the IPTS, will be taken to the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court, while his accomplice will be taken to the Kangar Magistrate's Court in Perlis for remand purposes.
