KUALA LUMPUR: A police officer attached to a district headquarters in Perak was arrested over suspicion of abetting a kidnap on Jan 10 in Bandar Sri Sendayan, Seremban.

The cop with the rank of inspector is among seven people who were detained for abducting a Bangladeshi businessman.

The kidnapping was allegedly due to the Bangladeshi victim owing some money to the suspects over an immigration matter.

The officer allegedly helped the other six suspects- all Bangladeshis- to carry out the kidnapping.

A police source said the victim's younger brother, who learnt about his brother's disappearance subsequently lodged a report.

It is learnt that the victim had also assaulted for not repaying RM70,000 in debts he owed the suspects.

The source said kidnappers had also demanded RM25,000 ransom for the victim's release.

Acting on the victim's brother report, a team of police initiated a raid on the suspects and rescued the man.

Meanwhile the inspector was detained on Friday at his office in Perak.

Seremban police chief Assistant Commissioner Arifai Tarawe, when contacted, said all seven suspects are under remand pending investigations.
