KUALA LUMPUR: Police today arrested a man to assist in investigations into the discovery of cat carcasses and skeletons at a condominium unit in Bandar Sri Permaisuri here.

Cheras district police chief Assistant Commissioner Zam Halim Jamaluddin said the 31-year-old tenant of the condominium unit was arrested in the district yesterday.

"He has been remanded until March 28 to assist investigations."

On March 11, a landlord discovered animal carcasses at a condominium unit in Bandar Sri Permaisuri, Cheras.

The tenant of the unit was alleged to have a morbid hobby of killing animals, primarily cats. The discovery was made after residents complained of a foul stench coming from the unit.

Animal crime analyst and Malaysia Animal Association president Arie Dwi Andika had said the condominium management contacted the unit owner about the issue.

The landlord allegedly found tens of cat skeletons, organs and carcasses.

Arie had claimed there were chopped up animals parts and minced animal meat in the unit and that the home was in a deplorable state, covered in blood stains.

Arie had said there was a room in the unit filled with animal carcasses, believed to be cats, in the late stages of decomposition.

The landlord lodged a report at the Salak Selatan police station on March 13.

The case is being investigated under Section 428 of the Penal Code for mischief by killing or maiming animals.

The case grabbed headlines and drew strong reactions from many people.

The tenant's neighbours told Bernama on Saturday that the tenant is an animal lover. A neighbour had said the tenant looked ill in recent months and had lost a lot of weight.
