KUCHING: A man has surrendered himself to the authorities after a video footage of him beating his girlfriend at an eatery along Jalan Pending, here, went viral on social media yesterday.
District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Ahsmon Bajah said the suspect was arrested when he came to the Kuching district police headquarters (IPD) here, at 6pm.
"Initial investigation found that the incident happened due to a misunderstanding between the couple, who are locals and in their 30s.
"However, the victim did not suffer any injuries from the incident," he said in a statement, today.
Ahsmon said the incident took place on Wednesday before the 20-second closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage went viral on Facebook.
He said the suspect's girlfriend had lodged a police report on the incident and the case is currently being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
