RANAU: Two illegal immigrants who attempted to apply for new MyKad using the identity of dead people have been arrested by police.
In the 9.30am incident yesterday, a local woman in her 40s, believed to be the mastermind of the syndicate, was also nabbed.
District police chief deputy Superintendent Sammy Newton confirmed the incident, saying the two illegal immigrants were women believed to be from the Philippines.
The duo, aged 16 and in her 30s, had come to the National Registration Department (NRD) office to apply for the documents.
He said upon checking the MyKad identification numbers, the images and fingerprints available in NRD’s database did not match the applicants' data.
“Among the documents submitted by the suspects include marriage certificates, birth certificate, non-citizens birth certificate, MyKad application forms and Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) inquiry form.
“Besides that, there were also 50 of RM100 notes attached,” Sammy said when contacted.
In a joint operation between the Ranau and Tuaran police, he said the mastermind of the syndicate was also arrested on the same day.
“The three suspects were brought to a district office (second-class magistrate) for remand application starting today until Feb 15.”
The case is being investigated under Section 420/511 of the Penal Code.
