BUTTERWORTH: A Bangladeshi man pleaded guilty at Sessions Court today to bribing RM228 to a policeman last week.

The accused, 43-year-old Md Aiub Ali, who works as a construction worker, made the plea after the charge was read to him before judge Norhayati Mohamad Yunus.

According to the charge sheet, he was accused of offering RM228 to a policeman, Sergeant Mohamad Khir Bachok, at North Seberang Perai Police Headquarters on Feb 1 between 11am to 11.30am.

He attempted to bribe Mohamad Khir to influence him to use a passport photocopy of one Sri Hayumini as replacement for Nursina Hassan, an Indonesian who was being investigated for not possessing valid travel documents.

He was charged under Section 17(b) of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 which carries a jail term of not more than 20 years and fine not less than five times the amount of bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Norhayati then fixed Feb 20 for next mention and call for a language interpreter so that the accused can understand the course of the court proceedings.

“I am not sure if Md Aiub understood the charge against him. So we will call for an interpreter to explain the case to him,” she said.

He was also not offered bail as he was a foreigner.

The case was prosecuted by Mohamad Azlan Basri while Md Aiub was not represented.
