IPOH: Two police corporals were charged in the Sessions Court here on three counts of receiving bribes amounting to RM1,800 three years ago.

The duo were charged with committing the three offences in Kuala Kangsar between Sept 3 and Oct 15, 2015.

Wan Nooruzhafizam Wan Mohd Noor, 37, and Abd Samad Ahmad, 52, claimed trial after the charges were read before judge S. Indra Nehru.

For the first and second charges, the duo who were attached to the operational intelligence division of the Narcotics Department of the Kuala Kangsar police headquarters were alleged to have jointly received bribes of RM500 and RM300 from one Muhamad Saifulriezzuan Samsuddin as inducement to not take action against him for selling ketum.

They were alleged to have committed the offences in a white-coloured Proton Wira parked under a tree near Arena Square in Kuala Kangsar at 10pm on Sept 3 and 7.50pm on Oct 6, 2015.

In the third charge, the duo were alleged to have received a bribe of RM1,000 from the same individual at the side of the main road in Kampung Bendang Kering at 3.30pm on Oct 15 that year.

All three offences were classified under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, punishable under Section 24 of the same act.

If found guilty, the duo are liable to a maximum jail term of 20 years and fine of five times the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Prosecution was handled by MACC prosecuting officer R. Kumuthambal while the accused were represented by counsel K. Nathan.

Indra Nehru allowed bail of RM10,000 in one surety each and ordered Wan Nooruzhafizam and Samad to hand their passports over to MACC until proceedings were completed.

The court then set Oct 25 for remention of the case.
