GEORGE TOWN: A lorry driver has been charged at the Magistrate Court with trafficking over one tonne of drugs last month.

Ooi Beng Lee, 47, arrived at the court at about 9am and covered his face to avoid being photographed while he was escorted by the police to the courtroom.

He was charged before Magistrate L. Umma Devi while deputy public prosecutor Shafiq Mahadi prosecuted the case. The accused was represented by lawyer Datuk Michael KL Chee.

According to the charge sheet, Ooi was accused of trafficking 1,065,575 grams of methamphetamine at No 51, Jalan Perusahaan in Jelutong at about 4.40pm on Aug 31.

He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and could be punished under Section 39(B)(2) which carries a death sentence or a lifetime imprisonment and caning not more than 15 times.

No plea was recorded.

Shafiq requested for the accused to not be granted bail. Umma Devi accepted and fixed Nov 16 for chemical report.
