PETRA JAYA: The six policemen arrested for extortion have been remanded for three days to facilitate investigation into their case.
Clad in purple and orange lock-up uniform, all suspects including a 53-year-old inspector appeared calm when they were produced at the magistrate's court here today.
The policemen aged between 25 and 53 nodded their heads when the court interpreter read them the remand application in the Bahasa Melayu.
All suspects, who were unrepresented, appealed to the Court to be released on police bail on the grounds that they are married with children and that they would give full cooperation to the investigation team.
Magistrate Zulhairil Sulaiman, however, denied their request and ordered all suspects to be remanded until Aug 12.
The remand order against the suspects was filed by investigation officer Inspector Ajaas Mohd Ibrahim from the Padawan district police headquarters.
It was reported that the six policemen aged between 25 and 53 were picked up from several locations in the state between 10pm last night and 3am today.
They were picked up from their houses and office Kuching, Padawan and Lundu.
Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Dev Kumar said the group of rogue policemen were arrested after arrested after two men, aged 44 and 65, lodged police reports against them at Batu Kawa and Sematan for allegedly extorting money.
"One of the suspects is an inspector attached with the administration department at the Sarawak police headquarters here.
"The other five are rank and file personnel from various units at the Kuching district police headquarters," said Dev in a statement earlier.
