JOHOR: Two policemen from the Seri Alam district police headquarters allegedly involved in a RM35,000 extortion case were released on police bail today.

Johor police chief Commissioner M. Kumar said the two, aged 29 and 37, from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department were not given a remand extension, pending completion of the alleged extortion investigation.

"The investigation papers will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor's office after they have been completed," he said in a statement today.

The two were detained to facilitate investigations involving eight other policemen who allegedly demanded RM40,000 for the release of a suspect.

Kumar said the eight policemen, including an Inspector, who had been arrested earlier were also released after the four-day remand order ended.

On Wednesday, a police inspector and seven policemen were reported to have been detained to assist in the investigation of an extortion case involving RM35,000 in cash.

Kumar had said all eight, aged 20 to 50, including two women, were remanded for four days to allow further investigations under Section 384 of the Penal Code.

The arrests came after a cleaning lady claimed that she had given RM35,000 to secure her brother's release, after he was arrested over a drug related offence.

In the report on Monday night, the 41-year old woman claimed that a police officer demanded RM40,000 to release her sibling but despite paying RM35,000, her brother was still not released.
