SANDAKAN: Police arrested seven drivers and seized their cars, believed used as illegal taxis, in an operation dubbed 'Op Kereta Sapu' at the town centre here, yesterday.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azhar Hamin said the drivers were aged between 24 and 54.

“These ‘kereta sapu’ not only cause traffic obstruction by double parking in front of a financial institution here but also endanger the lives of the public (passengers),” he said.

He said the seized vehicles and the owners were taken to the district police headquarters for investigation under Section 33 of the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board Act 1987 for prohibition of use of unlicensed public service vehicles.

Mohd Azhar reminded members of the public to use public transportation registered with the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board for safety reasons.

“I would also like to again advise motorists and road users to comply with traffic rules when on the road particularly during festive seasons.

“They should practice safe and considerate driving to help make our roads safer and to reduce accidents,” he said.
