GEORGE TOWN: Dozens of workers in a factory had a fright when acid spilled into its common area today.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said hydrochloric acid was spotted in the compound of the premises at Jalan Bukit Gedung, Bayan Baru about 6.25am.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

He said initial investigations showed pipe leakage had led to the spillage of the corrosive liquid into an open area.

"The workers made a distress call after noticing a pungent smell in the air.

"Firemen arrived at the scene and turned off the valve of the tank to avoid further leakage. We also ensured the spilt acid flowed to a proper irrigation channel," he said.

Some 13 firemen from Bayan Baru and Jalan Perak stations were deployed to the scene.
