KUALA LUMPUR: SURAU Al-Ansar in Taman Sri Rampai will be upgraded by the end of next year to accommodate a larger congregation.

“The upgraded surau will be able to accommodate about 700 people,” said Setiawangsa MP Datuk Ahmad Fauzi Zahari.

It can currently accommodate some 500 people.

He said its facilities would include a lecture hall, Islamic kindergarten, nursery, community hall and Al-Quran and Fardu Ain classes.

He said the construction would cost an estimated RM2.5 million.

He said the committee was waiting for approval from City Hall to start work.

“The surau committee is appealing for funds from Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Department, Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council and other agencies,” said Fauzi at a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house and fundraising drive for Gaza at the surau recently.

He said an individual, who preferred to remain anonymous, had donated RM100,000.

More than 1,000 Sri Rampai residents attended the function and contributed to the Gaza fund.

Fauzi later attended a Raya open house at Sri Ayu Apartments nearby. Some 500 residents turned up and were treated to a buffet spread of traditional dishes, including lemang, nasi impit, satay, kambing golek and rendang.

Joint-management body (JMB) chairman Izani Ibrahim said the open house was held to forge ties between the residents and the JMB members.
