SPECIAL PROGRAMME: The people are eager to break fast with the prime minister at Padang MPK 1

KUANTAN: It all started as a simple "buka puasa" gathering at Padang MPK 1 here but it has now become the most-awaited daily event during Ramadan.

And for the first time, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was expected to join the people to break fast at the local council field during his working visit here tomorrow (Sunday) before performing the Maghrib prayer at the nearby state mosque Masjid Sultan Ahmad Shah 1.

Earlier, Najib will attend a briefing on the state development at Wisma Sri Pahang and he was scheduled to perform the Isya and Terawih prayers at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Mosque in Bandar Indera Mahkota after the buka puasa event.

Members of the public and traders at Jalan Mahkota Ramadan bazaar are eager to have the prime minister at the field, which had attracted royal family members and state leaders to break fast there before.

One of the frequent visitors, Rashidah Rashid, 68, said she was excited to join Najib at the function.

"I'm amazed that the prime minister could join us despite his tight schedule. I will cook special meals and invite my family members to join the buka puasa at the field," said Rashidah who lives in Jalan Bukit Sekilau here.

Food stall operator Wan Nor Asiah Wan Sulaiman, 40, said all the traders were excited to join the programme as it would allow them to meet the prime minister.

"I hope he will also visit our stalls and buy some of the food here," said Wan Nor Asiah who has been selling "nasi kukus ayam berempah" at the Ramadan bazaar in the past three years.

She said Padang MPK 1 had become a new attraction here and many local and foreign tourists had also joined the daily "buka puasa" at the vast field.

Mohd Ufiz Ghani, 23, from Pekan said he would buy food at the Ramadan bazaar and break fast with his friends at the field for the first time tomorrow.

About six years ago, the field near the state mosque was the favourite to break fast only among students. They chose the green due to its strategic location in the middle of the town, with the most famous Jalan Mahkota Ramadan bazaar just on its edge.
