IPOH: Some 160 express bus drivers and their co-drivers have undergone urine test at the Aman Jaya Bus Terminal.

National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) enforcement officer Najmiah Hanafi said none were tested positive for drugs.

“We started stationing ourselves at the terminal from June 21 to conduct random tests daily.

“We will continue doing so to keep the drivers and their co-drivers on their toes,” said Najmiah during a road safety advocacy programme here recently.

Najmiah said the tests would be intensified during Op Selamat, which will take effect a week before and after Hari Raya.

Meanwhile, Perak Road Transport Department assistant enforcement chief Azman Abdul Rahman said since June 21, the majority of offences committed by the express buses were related to tyres.

“Besides issuing summonses, the buses were also barred from being used until repairs were made,” said Azman.

State Road Safety Department director Laila Mazwin Zakaria said advocacy by the department would be intensified as Hari Raya draws near.

“We will highlight to the people the importance of road safety,” she said, noting that 80 per cent of accidents were due to human negligence.

Earlier, 21 officers and personnel conducted the operation which began at 3pm. Volunteers from the National Service Volunteers Brigade were also part of it.
