IN a significant stride towards fostering global artistic exchange, SARENG Gallery has unveiled its inaugural International Art Residency programme, featuring acclaimed Malaysian artist Hisyamuddin Abdullah as its first resident.
This biennial initiative marks a pivotal moment for the Malaysian art community, offering artists unparalleled opportunities for growth, collaboration, and international exposure.
From July 15 to Sept 30, 2024, the residency will unfold at Studio Pompstraat, nestled in the vibrant artistic hub of Charlois, Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. This multidisciplinary space, housing six studios and a communal project area, epitomises Rotterdam's rich cultural landscape.
Since its inception in 2004, Studio Pompstraat has served as a creative sanctuary for artists from around the world, fostering a dynamic environment conducive to artistic exploration and innovation.
NURTURING ARTISTIC TALENT
The collaboration between SARENG Gallery and Studio Pompstraat, supported by Foundation N.A.C. (Nieuwe Ateliers Charlois), underscores a commitment to nurturing artistic talent.
The residency culminates in a group exhibition during the esteemed Groot Rotterdams Atelier Weekend, curated by Foundation B.a.d., showcasing the culmination of Hisyamuddin's creative journey during his stay.
SARENG Gallery co-founder Syukur Ali highlights the transformative impact of artist residencies when he says: "Artist residencies play a crucial role in the development of an artist's career by providing dedicated time, space and resources. It allows artists like Hisyamuddin to immerse themselves in a new environment, fostering dialogue and collaboration within a diverse artistic community."
He further emphasises on the broader benefits: "These programmes offer invaluable networking opportunities and exposure to new audiences, fostering innovation and experimentation. We envision this residency as a catalyst for Hisyamuddin to explore new techniques and themes, ultimately contributing to the evolution of Malaysian contemporary art."

The 2024 edition of the International Art Residency programme is made possible through generous support from Bloomberg and Asia Art Archive, underscoring a growing recognition of Malaysian art on the global stage.
Expressing his optimism about the programme's impact, co-founder Chong Wei-Hsiang says: "Organising this international residency is a testament to our commitment to bolstering the Malaysian art scene. We aim to cultivate a robust ecosystem of artistic exchange, enhancing the visibility and reputation of Malaysian art worldwide."
