KUALA LUMPUR: United States-based singer-songwriter and Crazy Rich Asians theme singer Cheryl K is coming up with a poignant new single on Friday, her 28th birthday.

In a statement yesterday, Cheryl said the self-written song Purpose will be released internationally at midnight. It is produced by Kev Luu who has worked with artistes such as Lil Wayne, Celine Dion, Usher, Lil Nas X and Britney Spears.

"This song also has the magical touch of pianist Michael Orland who has served 16 seasons on American Idol as musical director, pianist, arranger and vocal coach.

"Michael has famously worked with artistes and lyricists as Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Lopez, Diane Warren, Jordin Sparks, Katharine McPhee and Kristin Chenoweth over the years."

The song also features electric guitarist and Berklee University graduate Bruno Rios.

"I wrote this power ballad back in 2017 when I was going through a very difficult time of my life. One of my closest childhood friends committed suicide and I was devastated," said Cheryl who has dedicated the song to her friend.

"Purpose aims to create more mental health awareness, and to encourage anyone going through desperate times to find purpose in life and hope from God.

"It took me six years to finally have the strength to record and release this but I hope it will be worth it."

Purpose will be available on all major music platforms including Spotify, iTunes, YouTube, Amazon Music, Google Music, Instagram, and TikTok.
