IT is often said that the first week that marks the month of Syawal will see the Klang Valley's, especially Kuala Lumpur's bustling nightlife almost grind to a halt.

Nothing can be further from the truth, for a cursory search our team recently made on cyberspace has revealed that lots of popular venues in the federal capital and its surroundings as still welcoming diners and guests, and presenting them with good music, good food and good shows from April 22 to 30.

1. Simply Jazz By Tin Box

For starters, there is Simply Jazz By Tin Box in Block C5, Publika, off Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur.

This venue for great jazz tunes opens from 11.00am to 11.00pm from Sundays to Thursdays, and from 11.00am to 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Among the artistes who perform here are Michael Veerapen (piano), Julian Chan (saxophone), YH Foo (bass), Cliff Wong (drums), Wei Li (piano) and Junji Delfino (vocals).

2. Simply Live By Tin Box

Simply Live By Tin Box is at TREC, Jalan Tun Razak. Opening hours are 6.30pm to midnight Tuesday to Thursday and 6.30pm to 1am Friday to Saturday.

Its resident band entertains visitors every Wednesday to Saturday, and some of the singers and musicians who perform regularly at this venue are June Wong, Hoyee Chan, Karmun Ooi, David Nooi and JC Lew.

3. Jao Tim

In Jalan Sultan, Chinatown, there is Jao Tim which proudly presents artistes with diverse musical backgrounds in its Live At Jao Tim sessions.

Music lovers can enjoy 8.30pm showcases by Kirana Kay (April 23), Shi En And Yee Xing (April 25), Nina, KK And Desmond (April 26), Irma Seleman (April 27), Poova And Rozz (April 28) and The Frankie Sixes (April 30).

4. Kinda Blue

At the Kinda Blue Jazz Club And Restaurant in Lorong Kapar, off Jalan Syed Putra, music lovers can enjoy monthly jazz, blues, R&B and rock music by local and international acts. The regulars here on Saturdays include Rodin JS Kumar on bass, Jordan Rivers on the guitar, VJ Thison on drums and D Jumawan on the piano.

Better still, April 29 and 30 mark the Unesco International Jazz Day, so expect a lot more big names to celebrate the occasion.

5. Bobo KL

Bangsar's popular nightspot Bobo KL in Jalan Bangkung, Bukit Bandaraya will feature the Young KL Singers with their latest showcase, A Singing And A Swinging at 8pm from April 26 to 29.

6. The Joke Factory

Comedy enthusiasts can visit The Joke Factory in Publika, for on April 26 there will be a brand new comedy show titled Making S#it Up, which stars promising new stand-up comics as Henry Choo, Arul and Farid Azmeir.

There is also The Ha Ha Hari Raya Show on April 28 with Aaron Aw, Akashah, Adullah, Fattah and Ayim.

7. KLPAC

The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) in Sentul Park, off Jalan Ipoh will have the City Roars! Festival 2023 on April 29.

This is an international platform that brings together independent artistes from all over Asia.

The festival serves as a collaborative space for artistes to share and present new musical ideas.

It is jointly organised by Soundscape Records, Dong Tai Du and Taiwanese label Emerge Music.

8. PJPAC

Last but not least, the Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre (PJPAC) in One Utama Shopping Centre, Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya hosts the Miss Belly Dance Asia Competition 2023 at 9.30am and 7pm on April 30.

This interesting and colourful event features the best of belly-dancers from around Malaysia and Asia.
