KUALA LUMPUR: The Sutra Foundation, under artistic director Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, is marking National Day with a colourful showcase of Odissi performed by nine talented dancers.

The young and dynamic talents, Aishwaryaa, Tishaa, Harini, Yovvani, Ruphaa, Kanishha, Jevita, Ruchika and Deshna will perform in Dancers At Large, a special Odissi presentation at Sutra House in Persiaran Titiwangsa 3, Taman Titiwangsa here at 8.30pm on Aug 26, 27 and 28.

Ramli said in a statement today that Dancers At Large was one of Sutra's most ambitious performances under the Sutra Dance Outreach Programme that began in 2013.

"Immense care goes into crafting a Sutra Production, be it in terms of impeccable design input, selection of dance talent, devising sets, costumes, lighting or graphics and marrying them to the conceptual and choreographic intent to assure a flawless production," he said.

Ramli added that the nine dancers were meticuliously trained female dancers in the art of Odissi, a major ancient Indian classical dance that originates in the temples of Odisha in eastern India.

Dancers At Large, with Sivarajah Natarajan as lighting and technical director, is organised in collaboration with JCPR.

One of the dancers, Aiswaryaa said: "We rejoice in the excitement when given the opportunity to dance, or even when learning a new dance. We came not knowing what to expect and now, through the guidance of Datuk Ramli and Sutra, we share the same passion, which is the love of dance."

Ramli said: "The Sutra Dance Outreach Programme has turned out to be an effective initiative to discover potential talents outside the city centre. Sutra's investment of teaching during weekends in Kuala Selangor, Kajang and Rawang for the last seven years has paid off as we groomed accomplished talents.

"The young dancers represent the next generation of Sutra dancers."

Tickets are priced at RM50. The performance will be intimate with only 60 guests per night.
