KUALA LUMPUR: The country's comics and animation industry suffered a "slowdown" over the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Movement Control Order (MCO).

But the transition to the endemic phase since April 1 has gradually revitalised the industry, and to give it a much-needed boost, the Animation Society of Malaysia (Animasi) will be holding a two-day Ramadan animation festival on April 23 and 24.

Aptly called Zoom Kartun Ramadan, it will feature lots of activities spearheaded by Malaysian cartoonists and animators.

The festival will be held at KL Gateway Mall from 10am to 6.30pm daily.

Animasi president Amir Hamzah said that Zoom Kartun Ramadan was also aimed at celebrating Malaysian Cartoonist Month every April.

"April 1 is the anniversary of one of our most popular comics Gila-Gila. That's why we chose it as Malaysian Cartoonists' Day," he said in an interview with Berita Harian Online today.

Amir said that Animasi first observed Malaysian Cartoonists' Day in 2015, and the festival's activities included cartoon workshops, animation forums and caricature contests.

"Entry to the event is free, and visitors stand a chance to obtain or win various memorabilia, as well as meet their favourite cartoonists," he said.
