KUALA LUMPUR: The Caliph Buskers' lead vocalist Azmi Saat is always ready to lend a hand to less fortunate Malaysians especially those who suffer from blindness.

Azmi, who has been the ambassador of Yayasan Maghfirah for the last three years, is helping the charitable foundation raise funds to purchase Braille Qurans for the Malaysian Association for the Blind.

"The association introduced me to Yayasan Maghfirah, which decided to help them obtain Braille Qurans and help provide Braille Quran classes," said Azmi in an interview with Berita Harian Online today.

"Yayasan Maghfirah and I produced a brief online video appealing for funds to purchase Braille Qurans."

Azmi said that he was honoured to help the blind become Quran-literate, especially in the holy month of Ramadan.

Besides Azmi, the foundation has also appointed actor Johan As'ari, songwriter and Jejak Rasul host Fedtri Yahya, and singer-songwriter Hafiz Hamidun as its ambassadors.

The foundation's chief operating officer Muhammad Shuib Noruddin said that they aimed to collect RM5 million from generous Malaysians by the end of Ramadan, as part of their Kempen Raikan Ramadan (Campaign to Celebrate Ramadan).

"Last year, we distributed RM1.2 million to 35,000 needy Muslims around the country and they included 15 families living in People's Housing Projects (PPR), orphanages, frontliners, and religious schools," he said.

"This year, we are targeting the same groups, but our focus will be the interior parts of the country. We will also distribute food and necessities to impoverished people in Egypt and Lebanon."
