KUALA LUMPUR: More efforts will be made to educate the younger generation on the development of the country's Tamil film industry over the last five decades.
The National Film Development Corporation (Finas) board member Denes Kumar said that it was important since the local Tamil film scene was growing.
"How many youngsters nowadays truly know the history of Malaysian Tamil cinema, the pioneer artistes, filmmakers and their contributions to the industry?" he said in a recent news report.
Denes, who heads the Indian content and Indian subcontinent market committee of Finas, said that Finas' Lensa Finas programme planned to promote the contributions of local Tamil film artistes to inspire youths to venture into the industry.
He also said that the Tamil film scene was gaining momentum amongst youths as they could relate themselves to characters in movies.
"An insightful presentation should reflect reality. The local Tamil film industry is improving, many youths are supporting it as they can relate to its realistic characters," he said.
Denes also said that the restrictions imposed on filmmaking as a result of Covid-19 were a blessing in disguise for producers as they provided an opportunity to test the market on different platforms like over-the-top (OTT) platforms.
However, he expressed optimism that the cinema industry would bounce back once the Covid-19 pandemic subsided.
"The OTT platform is the current trend in the new normal, but people will still go to cinemas, both will coexist," he said.
Meanwhile, Denes also advised aspiring local actors to pursue short acting courses readily available in many higher learning institutions.
