KUALA LUMPUR: Former governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, Tan Sri Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus, has been appointed as a non-executive independent director of AIA Group Ltd effective from Sept 21.

She will also serve as a member of the nomination committee at the insurance giant from tomorrow. 

AIA group chairman Edmund Tse said Nor Shamsiah's deep expertise in guiding the growth and governance of the financial industry will add valuable perspectives to its board, as AIA continues to grow across its diverse markets. 

"I am very pleased to welcome Nor Shamsiah to our board.  

"She has had a distinguished career in Malaysia and supporting international organisations," she said in a statement today. 

Nor Shamsiah, aged 59, currently serves as the chancellor of International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance  University in Malaysia. 

She also served in various roles over 34 years with Bank Negara. 

She joined BNM in 1987 and was appointed deputy governor from November 2010 to June 2016 and governor from July 2018 to June 2023.  

She was also the chairperson of Bank Negara's voard of directors, Monetary Policy Committee, Financial Stability Executive Committee, Reserve Management Committee, Risk Management Committee and Digital Technology Committee. 

Across these experiences, Nor Shamsiah has overseen the regulation and supervision of banks and insurance companies, as well as financial sector development and enforcement, among many areas.
