KUALA LUMPUR: Pop sensation Taylor Swift, who is known for her chart-topping hits, has transcended the boundaries of the music industry to become a focal point in the university classroom.

The University of Philippines Diliman made headlines earlier this year with the introduction of a groundbreaking elective course titled "Celebrities Studies: Taylor Swift in Focus" and more than 300 students registered for the limited slots within minutes, leading to a demand for extra classes.

Led by Professor Cherish Brillon, a self-proclaimed Swiftie, the course delves into the multifaceted aspects of Swift's celebrity status and her impact on global pop culture.

On the university's website, Brillon explained what sets this course apart is its exploration of Taylor Swift not only as a musician but also as a symbol of broader societal themes.

The syllabus extends beyond mere admiration for Swift's musical prowess to dissecting the complexities of class, politics, gender, race and the allure of success and mobility within Filipino society.

This phenomenon is not unique to the Philippines. Universities in the United States, including prestigious institutions like Harvard, Stanford and New York University have also offered courses dedicated to analysing Swift's discography and her impact on contemporary culture.
