KUALA LUMPUR: National squash player Chan Yiwen failed to live up to her top billing in International Madeira Island Tournament in Funchal, Portugal today.

The Kedah born athlete was upset by second seed Rana Ismail of Egypt in a hard-fought battle of 6-11, 9-11, 11-6, 3-11 that lasted 30 minutes in the women's final.

Yiwen's journey to the finals showcased her impressive form, defeating seventh seed Amina El Rihany of Egypt in the quarter-finals with a commanding performance of 11-6, 11-3, 13-11. In the semi-finals, she outplayed third seed Tessa Ter Sluis of Netherlands with scores of 11-9, 11-3, 11-2 in just 22 minutes.

Meanwhile, in the men's competition, national No. 4 Syafiq Kamal lost to fourth seed Mazen Gamal of Egypt 12-14, 6-11, 11-4, 4-11 in the quarter-finals.

Another Malaysian, Darren Rahul Pragasam showcased resilience and put up a strong challenge against third seed Ben Smith of England before going down 11-9, 7-11, 5-11, 11-7, 6-11 in second round match that lasted 51 minutes.
