KUALA LUMPUR: The big names did not disappoint as the national contingent added three more gold medals to its haul at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games yesterday.

In athletics, Paralympic gold medallists Abdul Latif Romly and Ziyad Zolkefli defended their gold medals in the men's long jump T20 and men's shot put F20, both intellectual impairment categories.

Latif comfortably secured the gold in the long jump with a leap of 7.18m. Saudi Arabia's Hassan Nasser Dawshi (6.80m) came in second, while Zulkifly Abdullah (6.48m) completed a 1-3 finish for Malaysia.

Malaysia achieved a 1-2 in the men's shot put with Ziyad taking the gold on 16.65m, while teammate Aliff Mohamad Awi came in second on 13.75m. Thailand's Boonkong Sanepoot (13.67m) completed the podium.

Earlier yesterday, Eddy Bernard did well to bag silver in the men's 100m T44 (physical impairment) after clocking 11.86s in the final.

Sri Lanka's Nuwan Indika Maththaka Gamage claimed the gold in a new games record time of 11.63s, while Saudi Arabia's Nour Mohammed Asana (12.07s) completed the podium.

In track cycling, Nur Suraiya Zamri and pilot Farina Shawati Adnan secured the women's 1,000m B (visual impairment) time trial gold after clocking one minute and 13.434 seconds in the final.

Teammates Nur Azlia Syafinaz Mohd Zais and pilot Nurul Suhada Zainal came in second on 1:14.083s, while China's Wang Linhua and Liu Zixin (pilot) clocked 1:14.787s to complete the podium.

The men's 1,000m B (visual impairment) time trial witnessed Khairul Hazwan Wahab and pilot Khairul Adha Rasol claiming silver after clocking 1:05.740s in the final.

China's Luo Fei and Mawen Hao (pilot) claimed the gold on 1:04.321s, while Iran's Mohammad Dalir and Rashnoreza (pilot) finished third (1:06.343s).

All three Malaysian pairs will be competing in the road events later this week.

In swimming, Imaan Aiman Redzuan bagged bronze in the men's 100m backstroke S14 (intellectual impairment) after clocking 1:02.98s in the final.

Japan's Naohide Yamaguchi (1:00.61s) and South Korea's Lee Inkook (1:01.41s) won gold and silver, respectively.

The men's 200m freestyle S5 (physical impairment) final saw Lee Zy Kher taking the bronze after clocking 2:47.62s in the final.

China notched a 1-2 in the event through Guo Jincheng (2:40.83s) and Wang Lichao (2:43.41s) who won gold and silver, respectively.

Malaysia has now won four gold, six silver and six bronze medals in the competition and is eighth overall — moving up from 10th on Tuesday — in the medal standings.

China lead the competition comfortably with a 67-53-45 haul. Iran (16-19-12) and Japan (12-13-20) are second and third.
