KUALA LUMPUR: With flag football set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, Malaysia will host the inaugural Asia-Oceania Championship in Shah Alam from Oct 27-29.

Joining Malaysia in this competition are India, Indonesia, Japan, Kuwait, Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.

Flag football is a distinctive variant of American football where, rather than tackling players to the ground, the defensive team's objective is to remove a flag or flag belt from the ball carrier to conclude a down.

"We are anticipating thrilling performances during the tournament," said International Federation of American Football president Pierre Trochet.

The competition kicks off with Malaysia facing New Zealand in the opening women's match at EV Arena on Oct 27.
