KEPALA BATAS: The Sports Ministry are aware of the recent temporary suspension of the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Association (PSM) by the Asian Sepak Takraw Federation (Astaf).

Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the ministry are concerned with the suspension but will not make any premature statements as the issue is still under investigation.

"We were notified of the suspension by PSM president Datuk Seri Ahmad Ismail, who needs to reply to a show-cause letter from Astaf."

"The ministry are following the development closely, but we will allow Astaf to complete the investigation first before taking any further action.

"PSM are still a legitimate association," said Reezal at a Ramadan event in Permatang Bertam today.

Reezal reiterated that the ministry do not require PSM to come up with an explanation on the current issue.

"It is not necessary for the government to get involved.

"We also respect Astaf as we should with any federation, be it at the national or world level.

"Together with the Sports Commissioner's Office, we are monitoring the situation closely," he added.

Astaf recently suspended PSM from all sepak takraw activities after Ahmad failed to respond within 14 days to four accusations made against him.

PSM also face the possibility of being kicked out from the Asian body after it was alleged that they violated an agreement to comply with all objectives and the constitution of the International Sepaktakraw Federation (Istaf) and Astaf which were agreed upon on March 14, 2008.
