IPOH: About 350 athletes are expected to compete in the Perak Open silambam championships in Ipoh on Dec 8.

Competition co-ordinator M. Tilagaan said the event has received great response from the public after silambam was dropped from the recent Malaysia Games in Perak.

He said the Perak Open, to be held at SM Poi Lam, has also attracted participants from other states because it is a national level competition.

Perak human capital development, sports and youth committee chairman Howard Lee will officiate the event.

“Many of the silambam athletes will want to show their abilities at the Perak Open after the sport was not held in the Malaysia Games,” said Tilagaan.

Tilagaan said the organisers aim to have a smooth competition that is free of controversies, and he urges the participants to show good sporting spirit.

He said initially the Perak Open was supposed to be held at Tenby International School but due to the great response from participants, the venue has been moved to SM Poi Lam NST is an official sponsor of the Perak Open.
