KUALA LUMPUR: The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) and Chef-de-Mission (CDM) Datuk Seri Abdul Azim Zabidi are still hesitant to reveal Malaysia’s Asian Games target despite the Indonesia event being only 12 days away.

The Asian Games is being used as a platform to see how far the Malaysian athletes have improved under the Podium Programme initiative.

The programme’s future is also expected to be determined by the results in Indonesia.

OCM president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria revealed that the council handed the proposed target to Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman on Monday.

“It is up to the minister on whether he wants to announce it during the flag handing ceremony on Friday,” said Norza after chairing the council’s executive committee meeting on Tuesday.

Azim said the target was determined following a meeting attended by the minister and representatives from the National Sports Council, National Sports Institute and OCM.

“We wait for Friday,” said Azim.

Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad will officiate the Asian Games flag handing ceremony in Putrajaya on Friday.

A total of 423 athletes from 35 sports will represent the country at the Asian Games.
