KUALA LUMPUR: The fate of world diving champion Cheong Jun Hoong on whether she will feature at the Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang, which begins August 18, is still unknown.

National contingent Chef de Mission, Datuk Seri Abdul Azim Mohd Zabidi said that he has yet to receive any news on the status of Jun Hoong’s knee injury as of Thursday afternoon.

"I just spoke with ASUM (Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia) honorary secretary Mae Chen, and they too have yet to receive any news or a decision from NSI (National Sports Institute).

"After NSI inform ASUM, then ASUM will update me, and only then will we carry out a joint press conference,” He told NSTP Sport.

Jun Hoong who won a silver medal in the 10m synchronised platform at the 2016 Rio Olympics, sustained an injury to her left knee two weeks ago and before this Azim had stated that Jun Hoong’s status would be made known today (Thursday).

The absence of the 2017 Budapest World Aquatics Championships 10m platform world champion will be a severe blow to the national contingent this time round after badminton ace Lee Chong Wei was forced to pull out following health issues.

Before this the national contingent had listed 426 athletes along with 147 officials who would be representing the country in 35 out of 40 events that will be contested at the Asian Games.
