THE national women's goalball squad have made it clear they are not competing to just "make up the numbers" and are determined to contribute to Malaysia's haul at the Kuala Lumpur Asean Para Games next week.
Despite having only been formed this year, the team's management are keen on at least winning a bronze medal on their debut in the regional event. Thailand swept both men's and women's gold at the Singapore Games in 2015.
Player Siti Hajar Hassan has assured that the team will give it everything they have.
"We started training in June and have played friendly matches with the men's senior team and learnt as much as possible from them as they have trained in China prior to this," said Siti Hajar.
The Kedah-born added that she and her teammates are bent on winning the gold as the National Sports Council (NSC) are likely to place them on a full time training programme if they are successful.
A total of 12 Malaysian players -six men and six women- will compete in the sport at the Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC).
Goalball is a team sport for the visually impaired. Players have their eyes covered as they compete with a ball with embedded bells.
