KUALA LUMPUR: The Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) are hoping to meet the owners of a new circuit being built in Beranang to discuss safety aspects.

Reports on social media state that the circuit, which has been named the Horizon Beranang Circuit, is being built on a 6-acre plot with a track length of 1km.

It is being developed by Horizon Motorsports Management Sdn Bhd, in cooperation with the Kajang Municipal Council.

MAM president Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir said the circuit owners had to obtain approval from MAM first if they were to host sanctioned races or events there.

"Yes, we will meet them (track owners) when they are ready. We will share with them our views (on safety)," said Mokhzani at an MAM event in Sungai Penchala today.

"I have seen pictures of the track and it looks good. We want to see what else they want to do there to make sure the place is safe to host events.

"It is not complete yet, so I do not want to comment too much for now."

Mokhzani said ensuring the safety of motorsports events, including for racers, crew and spectators, was MAM's priority.

"It (sanctioning) is not unique to Malaysia. In all sports, there are certified bodies that ensure sports are run correctly for both domestic and international events," he said.

"For motorsports in Malaysia, MAM have been given the responsibility by (world bodies) FIA and FIM to ensure the safety of participants. This is of utmost importance to us.

"Accidents can happen in motorsports. We want to minimise the risk as much as possible."

Safety in motorsports has become a major issue in Malaysia as three deaths have occurred in unsanctioned events over the past 18 months. — BERNAMA
