KUALA LUMPUR: Bringing Formula E back to Malaysia will require a great amount of promotional efforts to make it a success.

That is the view of a motorsports source who said that attracting fans, both local and foreign, to fill the stands on raceday will not be easy.

Earlier today, a Malaysian news portal reported that Formula E has invited Kuala Lumpur to host its season-ending race annually, from next year until 2030, but the government has yet to respond and Malaysia could lose the opportunity to Thailand.

"As a sports fan, I would love to see Formula E back in Malaysia, but to say that it would hugely impact our economy would be stretching it a little bit," said the source.

Disappointingly, there were hardly any spectators when Malaysia hosted Formula E in Putrajaya in 2014-2015.

"It was a grand event, impressive setup and so on, but not many people came.

"During the final years of Formula One being held here, we couldn't even give away the tickets. Do you think Formula E will be any easier to promote?

"If we are going to have it here again, the organisers will really have to plan their promotion meticulously to attract both local and foreign spectators."

Formula E often uses street circuits. The Putrajaya Street Circuit hosted the race in 2014-2015.

Sepang International Circuit, when contacted today, said they are not involved in any discussions to bring Formula E here.
