ABU DHABI: Mercedes AMG Petronas will be expected to defend their double-title win again for a record sixth time next year.

The team this year managed to equal the record which Ferrari had previously set from 2000-2004.

Petronas group strategic communications senior general manager Zahariah Abd Rahman hopes it will become a reality next season.

"We are working hard towards that goal. In fact in terms of engine lubrication technology we already have detailed plans for next season," said Zahariah.

"But at the same time, we have to accept that the standard of competition is tough every season, next year we are expecting Ferrari to be strong.

"But we are hoping to win again with the strong combination between Petronas and Mercedes."

Zahariah was speaking at the season-ending round in Abu Dhabi today.

She added that winning five drivers and constructors’ titles in a row since 2014 was more than just about the team and driver.

"People might not realise that many Malaysians had also played a part in this success through engine lubrication research."

Lewis Hamilton wrapped up the drivers title at the Mexico Grand Prix and now has 383 points after 16 podiums including 10 race wins this season.

The Briton has won the world title five times — 2008, 2014, 2015, 2017 and this year.

Mercedes AMG Petronas secured the constructors title at the Brazilian Grand Prix after collecting 620 points.
