KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian women's hockey team held on until half-time before Spain opened the floodgates to hammer them 7-0 in Group A of the Olympic Qualifier in Valencia on Saturday.

Nasihin Nubli's side soaked in the pressure before letting in soft goals.

World No. 18 Malaysia next play Canada, ranked 16th, on Sunday and it will not be an easy match.

World No. 7 Britain could only beat Canada 2-0 in an earlier match.

The Spanish goals were scored by Patricia Alvarez (30th, 56th, 57th), Belén Iglesias (37th), Maria Lopez (41st), Belén Iglesias (52nd) and Beatriz Perez (60th).

"We knew it was never going to be easy playing the hosts, but still, credit to my players because they held them until the half-time hooter.

"And only after 30 minutes, silly mistakes crept into their game and they were outclassed.

"We will play Canada next who had a good game against Britain.

"However, the plan is to beat Canada.

"We need to cut off unforced errors tomorrow to gain the upper hand," said Nasihin.
