KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian referee Nazmi Nasaruddin is on the right track to create history at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Nazmi, who was outstanding at the recent Asian Cup in Doha, has been selected as a candidate to officiate at the World Cup.

Nazmi, who started officiating matches in 2010, is the first individual in the country to officiate matches in the Asian Champions League (ACL) using Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Last year, Nazmi and his assistants, Zairul Khalil Tan and Arif Shamil Abd Rasid, officiated six ACL matches using VAR.

Additionally, Nazmi was invited to officiate several matches in the Saudi Pro League in 2023.

FAM referee committee chairman Datuk S. Sivasundaram said Malaysian referees, including Nazmi, were praised for their good job during the Doha Asian Cup.

Nazmi and his assistants were selected to officiate two matches in Doha: Iraq vs Vietnam and Uzbekistan vs Thailand.
