Cheah Liek Hou's world almost came crashing down when the Covid-19 pandemic led to the postponement of the Tokyo Paralympic Games last year.

Having established himself as a genuine contender for the SU5 men's singles gold medal, Liek Hou feared the worst as he thought the Paralympics would be cancelled altogether.

At 32, he was thinking of retiring without achieving his dream.

However, come Aug 24, Liek Hou will be in Tokyo for the challenge, and he hopes to return to Kuala Lumpur with a Paralympic title.

The delayed Paralympics are a blessing in disguise for Liek Hou as he believes he has improved in all aspects under the guidance of his coach Rashid Sidek.

Liek Hou's biggest challenge will come from Indonesia's Dheva Andrimusthi in Tokyo.

"I was really sad when the Paralympics were postponed last year. I thought my dream would be dashed by Covid-19," said Liek Hou.

"I prayed and hoped every day that the Covid-19 situation would get better, and I continued training, although I did not play in tournaments for several months.

"Now, I am more determined than ever to fight for glory.

"My main obstacle is none other than Dheva.

"However, I have defeated him twice in a row in our last two matches, and I believe it will put some pressure on him in Tokyo.

"I have to thank Rashid for guiding me since last year. I used to lose to Dheva easily before Rashid came into the picture.

"He has also given me the confidence to go the distance in tournaments, and I am feeling very confident ahead of the Paralympics.

Liek Hou defeated Dheva in the Dubai Para International and the Spanish International this year.

The Malaysian is eagerly awaiting the draw on Aug 26. He hopes to avoid early round meetings against Dheva and another Indonesian Suryo Nugroho.

"My first target is to reach the semi-finals. Depending on the draw, I will likely face Dheva or Suryo for a place in the final.

"My fitness level will play a big role in Tokyo as the semi-finals and the final will be held on Sept 4.

"However, it is not the only thing I will be thinking about during the Paralympics.

"I have to keep myself safe and healthy and observe all Covid-19 guidelines. It will be a huge challenge for everyone in Tokyo," he added.
