THE Badminton World Federation (BWF) yesterday called off three tournaments amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The affected events are the Australian Open (June 2-7), Hyderabad Open (Aug 11-16) and Korean Masters (Nov 24-29).

These tournaments were already earlier suspended due to the pandemic.

BWF then asked the respective organisers to propose replacement dates in accordance with the resumption of the World Tour in September.

However, the organisers could not decide on the new dates for their World Tour events.

BA of Malaysia secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh, however, said the cancellation of the tournaments will not affect BAM's plan for the national shuttlers.

"Some tournaments may have been called off but there are still sufficient events for the shuttlers from September," said Kenny.

"The pandemic has made things unpredictable. We will monitor the situation and identify suitable tournaments for our players."

Kenny hopes that the Malaysia Open in Bukit Jalil on Nov 24-29 will not be affected by the Covid-19.

Meanwhile, BWF secretary-general Thomas Lund said the changes are necessary for their revised calendar.

"However, it does not impact the revised calendar as we took in account possible tournament cancellations," he added. The World Tour restarts with the Taipei Open on Sept 1-6.
