KUALA LUMPUR: Building affordable houses is a challenge, according to Datuk Samsuri Awang Mat, deputy head of the Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association (Rehda) Kelantan chapter.

He said that many people are missing out on home ownership due to rising housing prices.

A terrace house within a 20-kilometre radius of the town centre, according to Samsuri, is currently worth roughly RM220,000.

"Personally, from a developer's point of view, it is really challenging to build and offer affordable homes," Samsuri said.

If Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) can build affordable housing, it is a golden opportunity for the B40 group to own a home, he said.

If the alliance wins the upcoming state elections in Kelantan, BN and PH have committed to building 5,000 affordable housing units within the next five years.

"If BN and PH can do this if they are given a chance to govern Kelantan, then this effort must be supported. If the affordable units are offered below that (RM220,000), he hopes that plan can be successfully implemented," he told Bernama yesterday.

A 50 per cent rebate will also be provided for the housing plan process fee as part of the BN and PH's manifesto for Kelantan, notably for members of the B40 group, young people, and those who have recently started families.
