KEEPING a live plant in the house will certainly not draw mosquitoes or any unwanted pests that would wreak havoc in your household.

Indoor plants tend to purify the air in your house and make the environment a better place to live in, other than sprucing it up aesthetically.

Regardless of the type of house you live in, be it a flat, apartment or condominium, and how confined the space is, there is definitely some available space for you to have your own mini garden or collection of plants.

Those blessed with a balcony may want to utilise the space by adding some green or flowering plants. For units that come without a balcony, you can keep miniature plants in little containers and place them

on the dining or study table, or anywhere near a window so that they can get ample natural light during the day.

If you have the excuse of not having any time to look after, or maintain the plants, then the other option you have is to get a succulent or cactus because these are some of the most draught-tolerant and “forgiving” plants; meaning you can leave them alone without watering them daily.

Succulents have juicy leaves, stems and roots, and they are easy to care for. They also range in colours from blue-green, chartreuse, pink, red, yellow, white, burgundy, almost black, variegated and more. The leaves are either rounded, needle-like, berrylike, ruffled or spiky.

They look stunning when grouped together in a small pot. Adding small coloured stones or pebbles will make them look even more attractive.

Most succulents are easy to grow and can evolve with special water-storage tissues that allow them to survive in environments that are too dry for other types of plants.

They grow well in dry humidity and warm conditions. While they like direct light, they can also adapt to lower light.

Some of the best succulents to consider for air purification are aloe vera, corn plant and snake plant. Other succulents include Cotyledon tomentosa, Sedum rubrotinctum, Haworthia limifolia, Coral Cactus, Graptopetalum bellum, Kalanchoe tomentosa and Echeveria pulidonis.
