IN dramas or films, we might have seen families with young kids having a tree house in their back yard, but in Malaysia it is a rare sight.
A playhouse can be a great idea, as your children can then “own” their own outdoor space.
Landscape solutions company NBS Corp Sdn Bhd managing director David Kho knows that more often than not, parents tend to spend a lot on sprucing up their homes’ exterior, but have been guilty of leaving out space for the children.
“As a grown-up and parent, we usually don’t mind paying for the pretty flowers and other features of the garden just to make our house look more attractive, but sometimes forget to consider a space for the children’s own outdoor activities,” he told NST Property.
Kho decided to come up with ready-made playhouses to change people’s mindset that a garden is not just about flowers or water features. Playhouses, too, can add to the landscape.
His company builds playhouses inspired by traditional kampung houses and are made entirely from hard wood, such as Chengal (Neobalanocarpus heimii (King) Ashton) and Kekatong (Cynometra malaccensis Meeuwen).
Kho said he has also built other hardscape features to the exterior of landed houses for owners who wanted to add a “tropical garden” element.
“I’ve even created playhouses for cats, and, in some of my projects, I’ve built watch towers just outside the house,” he said, adding that people these days were getting more creative with their outdoor ideas.
“What’s so special about the playhouses that I build is that even adults can chill out in the porch of these buildings while the kids play upstairs in the house.
“Instead of normal gazebos, I’ve come up with this idea of infusing a patio and playhouse together in some of my creations,” said Kho.
