IN Feng Shui, each of the five elements — wood, water, fire, metal and earth — should correspond with a specific colour to bring balance, harmony and positive qi to one’s home or personal space.

However, before you get started, it is recommended that you find out first what your element is so as to avoid colours that may go against you.

You obviously want colours that provide high energy in your living space. Focus on the end result rather than just painting the room or living space with bright or grey colours that you like.

The colours that correspond with each of the five Feng Shui elements, according to an article published in www.thespruce.com, are:

WOOD: Green, Brown

FIRE: Red, Strong Yellow, Orange, Purple, Pink

EARTH: Light Yellow, Sandy/Earthy, Light Brown

METAL: White, Grey

WATER: Blue, Black

For example, according to Feng Shui expert Rodika Tchi (who writes for thespruce.com), someone who is of the Fire element has to avoid blue and black colours as they predominantly represent the Water element.

Apart from colours, one should also know the direction his room is facing. Each direction can bring about different energy levels. Rooms need a specific element or direction in order to thrive energetically.

South-facing rooms should focus on Fire and Wood colours, which means pink, orange, red, purple, and yellow are the most suitable.

For north-facing rooms, blue and black colours are preferable as they are mostly aligned with the Water element. Avoid Earth colours like brown or beige.

Rodika stressed that the interior of a house also played a big part in generating positive energy flow, adding that choosing the wrong colours was bad Feng Shui.

“It is about creating good energy that is needed, and this is where a skillful use of colours can bring about enormous benefits — living in a space that has vibrant, healthy energy, and is nourishing for you and your relationships,” she said.
