Malaysia was founded on the principle that people with different cultures, religions and backgrounds can coexist in a peaceful and democratic society.

Even before we gained our independence in 1957, society already consisted of different races, which became even more diverse after Malaysia came into being in 1963.

In a multiracial country, mutual respect and tolerance is crucial. Without that, Malaysia would certainly face chaos. Everybody must set aside any differences they might have and work together to ensure progress.

In this matter, Islam also encourages the spirit of multiracial and multiculturalism. Through the Quran, Allah SWT said "O humanity, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you." (Surah Al – Hujurat: 13).

From this verse, it is clear to us that God created human beings in various races so that we know each other through the spirit of friendship and cooperation, not through hatred and conflict.

One of the major benefits of living in a multiracial society is that the exchange of ideas, values, and habits can help increase the quality of life.

At the same time, in an incredibly diverse society, we will become more aware of our own cultural identity, leading to feeling the need to define our identity as well.

We might also feel the need to understand the differences and similarities with others from different backgrounds, making us prouder of our own heritage. As a result, the whole society becomes more interesting and complex.

We will always be exposed to new ways of doing things and fresh ways of looking at things through direct contact with people with different habits, ideas, and lifestyles.

This results in a mix of perspectives, talents, skills, and ideas which fosters innovation and makes space for outside – the -box mindsets. This can be seen through food, fashion, design, art, entertainment, sports, professional settings and many more.

Every individual, including race, has their own strengths and weaknesses. Instead of arguing with each other, everybody must learn and cooperate for peace and prosperity. Therefore, everybody needs each other to succeed to ensure society continues to progress as well as make the country great.

We must also learn the lesson from the racial tension in the United States (US) a few years ago which nearly brought its nation into deep chaos. Endless protest and distrust which happen there make life very difficult for ordinary Americans.

Though the US is the most powerful and technologically advanced country on earth, they are still unable to bring unity within their own multiracial society.

It goes without saying that conflict and misunderstanding can easily arise if we are not being respectful and sensitive towards each other.

Additionally, we can create many laws, rules and regulation to force everybody to live in peace and harmony, but it would be much better if everybody made the effort towards a peaceful society without being forced to do so through laws or legislations.

Let's be proud and cherish the multiracial society which we live in.
